2019 Symposium

You heard that right! The next Docomomo US National Symposium will take place in Honolulu, Hawaii from September 25-28, 2019 in collaboration with the Docomomo US/Hawaii chapter. From the iconic East-West Center, to the white sand beaches, to all things Ossipoff, come celebrate Hawai‘i’s unique blend of East-meets-West tropical modernism.

The 2019 Symposium will:

  • Explore how architects applied modernism’s core tenets within Hawai‘i’s climate and multicultural context, and what these buildings can teach us today as the world grapples with climate change and increasing urbanization.
  • Discuss the impact of World War II and statehood on the people, the culture, and the architecture of the territory and then state.
  • Celebrate the iconic Hawai‘i State Capitol Building its 50th anniversary and hear from key persons associated with the project, and efforts to maintain and preserve it.
  • Feature exclusive tours of significant mid-century homes, neighborhoods and districts, many that are closed to the public.


Save the Date - the 2020 National Symposium will be take place June 3-6 in Chicago.
